This is one of the many crazy book of the amazing author R. L. Stine. In this book, the two main characters named Brooke and Zeke audition for a play in their school known as "The Phantom". They both get the two leading roles. Rumors start going around that a boy who was supposed to play the phantom many years prior had disappeared and was never found. The legend says that whenever their school does this play, the Phantom appears to ruin the play. As the story progresses and they get ready for the play, things on the set start to mess up and become ruined. A trap door is found in the middle of the stage that appears to be broken but is said the be fixed by the time the production is said to start. Brooke and Zeke sneak down the trapdoor and find hidden rooms underneath the school. A night janitor, who does not actually work for the school, runs them off. The next day a new boy named Brian shows up in their class and wants to be in the play. All the roles are taken so he helps on the stage. The production starts and Brooke is shocked to find the phantom is not Zeke but the actual Phantom, who disappears when Brooke is blinded by a stage light. After the performance, Brooke and Zeke find a year book from 72 years ago that shows who played the original Phantom, only to discover it was their new classmate Brian. I would use this book around Halloween to read to the class and for quiet reading in the classroom. This is also a great chapter book for higher grades.
